"Mr President of the Commission, I followed the presentation of your programme and I totally share your vision for a Europe of the citizens and, at the same time, a Europe which is responsible and effective on the international stage. I also share your strategic choices in order for us to achieve this vision. We shall, moreover, also have the opportunity to discuss the individual policies both within the framework of our political groups and within the framework of our parliamentary committees, as well as other opportunities for discussion and cooperation with you. At the end of this day rich in ideas and discussions, I should like to point out that the efforts we need to make are many, varied, interactive and inter-dependent. They relate to all aspects of our economy and society. No-one can say that the economy is more important than social cohesion, that transport is more important than equal opportunities for both sexes. The policy we have followed over recent years has not borne the fruit we expected in terms of either growth or social cohesion. We have no room for either inertia or delay. The survival of our social model, the credibility of the European Union, the belief of citizens in this vision are being judged. We experienced this acutely during the recent European elections and we promised the citizens that we would change everything. The hour is therefore nigh for us to implement these changes. The reality and the challenges we have before us demand boldness, changes and innovation. We have spent enough years talking about reforms which have never come about or which did not come about to an adequate degree. As you know, reforms which are announced and discussed but which do not come about are harmful. They create confusion, insecurity and pessimism, irrespective of whether they concern bureaucracy, the insurance system or the pension system. They restrict consumption, they restrict entrepreneurship and they tie Europe down to the low rates of growth which we have today. Be bold, Mr President, my political group will stand by you. Pave the way for a new Europe with dynamism and hope."@en1
