"Mr President, my party and my political group hope that the European Council will decide to embark upon negotiations with Turkey concerning membership. It is just as important to point out that Turkey has a very long way to go, especially when it comes to human rights, the situation regarding minorities, the Cyprus issue and union rights. A great many legislative changes have occurred in Turkey, but it has to be realised that these are not matched by the reality on the ground and by changes in practice. Current Turkish legislation too is very deficient. I can point to the new criminal law that still in practice makes it a criminal offence to mention the Armenian genocide in Turkey. That is completely unacceptable, and to Turkey’s discredit that it continues to deny this historical fact. Recognition of the genocide would open the way to normalisation for the Armenians in Turkey and also to the normalisation of relations with Armenia – something that is necessary if Turkey is to become a member of the EU."@en1
