I should like to congratulate Mrs Prets on her report on the proposal for a Council directive implementing the principle of equal treatment between women and men in the access to and supply of goods and services. I support this report, especially as to the adoption of a proactive approach, in line with the approach already adopted in the Treaty. Equality between men and women, which is a core value of European civil society, is a right that belongs to all European citizens. It is therefore incumbent on EU institutions to protect that right in all fields. We therefore urge the Commission to submit new proposals aimed at effectively combating discrimination based on sex and at ensuring genuine equality in areas other than work."@en1
