"Mr President, we will, this week, be meeting survivors of the war in Congo that has already claimed 3 500 000 victims. While the international community remains completely indifferent, that country has for years endured a conflict that is still continuing. I rejoice that peace is – apparently – underway, and hope that those involved will experience this in the same way, because at the moment, the conflict in Kivu is, to all intents and purposes, still very definitely ongoing. For women, in particular, the situation remains bleak. I have heard dreadful accounts of children as young as 10 and grandmothers aged 70, and of women whose ages range between the two, mothers and others, who have become the victims of systematic rape as some kind of weapon of war. I think we should do more to prevent this kind of violence from being trivialised, to condemn it and help the victims. After all, justice will never prevail if the source of life is killed."@en1
