". We obviously need much more time to debate this subject, which is of great importance to the European Parliament and Members of all political hues. Mrs Bergaz Conesa, in the two cases that I mentioned just now and that were the subject of the question that I was asked, the Commission does not have the right to order a preventive suspension of the work. I am obliged to tell you this. We have gone quite a long way already in stating that, given the extent of this project and all of the ecological, socioeconomic and technical questions that it raises, we have decided to carry out an overall assessment. Pending the results of this, some of the work can start. It will not be finished by June or July. Be that as it may, during the course of the summer the Commission will say: we think that this project is realistic and feasible or that it presents risks or problems. On this basis decisions will be made, in particular on whether to commit the European funding that has been requested. That is all that I can say today and I should like to thank you for your views and comments."@en1
