The ‘International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture’ is an important legally binding agreement which establishes a global framework for the sustainable conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. I believe this to be an important new element in the multilateral system. It is through such Treaties that we can ensure that all countries and all people have fair access to the world’s resources which rightly belong to all humanity. I support the amendment adopted by the Environment Committee, which we supported in the Agriculture Committee. The basic principle as far as I am concerned, however, is that farmers’ and growers’ rights must be preserved. They must remain free to grow crops which have been traditionally grown, without having to pay royalties."@en1
