"Madam President, I think that the Commission’s update report was very constructive. I also think that Mrs Sandbaek has produced a very sound report. She has produced a whole lot of proposals that strengthen the areas in which the Commission has stated that such strengthening is needed in order to achieve the objectives of combating poverty and these diseases. I want to take paragraph 26 of Mrs Sandbaek’s report, which is very central, as my starting point. This recalls that debt repayment and servicing account each year for almost 40% of the least developed countries’ GDP. That is incredible. I believe that the EU should take the initiative regarding the writing off of debts. Written off debts could also be earmarked so that they are, in the first place, used for efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis and perhaps also for education. In that way, the fight against poverty could really be strengthened and given impetus."@en1
