lpv:translated text	". We believe that the need to find acceptable solutions to radioactive waste management is one of the main problems, if not main problem affecting nuclear energy. The Commission feels that current policy in most Member States and candidate countries does not effectively address the problem of nuclear waste. It is imperative that Member States develop appropriate strategies and prepare detailed, timetabled programmes for the long-term management of all types of waste within their jurisdiction. The aim of the Directive is to encourage progress to this end, while stressing the importance of the various elements of the question: identifying and preparing disposal sites, carrying out important R[amp]D into identifying and implementing the best technical waste elimination solutions and technologies that will enable significant reduction of the amount and danger level of waste generated during the process of producing nuclear energy. Member States must be encouraged to work together on waste management, without losing sight of the principle that each country must deal with its own waste, except in special circumstances, and no activity in this field must endanger public health or the environment.
