".
The reason why we abstained in this vote is twofold. Firstly, under the terms ‘protect ACP bananas’ or ‘the supplier countries’, protection really goes to the capital invested in this sector, often though large financial groups in Great Britain or metropolitan France. Nothing, on the other hand, protects the real producers, the banana workers, against low salaries imposed on the pretext of competition, or against lay-offs carried out by both the winners and losers of the trade war.
Secondly, this vote is destined in the end to be biased in favour of one or other of the players in the global competition of this sector. We refuse to support one or other of the camps in this rivalry, the winner of which will be one of the multinational groups and certainly not the workers in this sector, nor consumers or taxpayers."@en1
