"Mr President, the draft resolution we are about to approve by codecision takes account of a profound change in the VAT system for travel agents. The urgent need to approve this legislation results from profound changes in the travel industry over the last 30 years, and the innumerable exemptions and derogations currently applicable in a sector where profit margins are very slender. The principal changes relate to the possibility of companies deducting VAT when they deal with conferences or incentive tourism and on-line bookings, areas where European travel agents must be protected from competitors from outside the Community. I only hope that the unanimity achieved in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs can also be obtained in the Council."@en1
