"Question No 39 by Antonios Trakatellis (): Recent newspaper articles discuss the intervention of the Commission which has called on the Greek authorities to postpone awards of public contracts until the curious system for awarding public contracts on the basis of a mathematical formula has been modified. The same publications claim that this formula has cost the Greek economy EUR 800 million. According to the Commission's answer to my previous question on the use of a mathematical formula in awarding public contracts in Greece (), it has addressed a letter to the Greek authorities in order to obtain information about how this formula is applied and what exactly it consists of. Given that the application of this specific formula since 1998 has led to a distortion of competition and the creation of oligopolies and even monopolies in the construction market for public works, whether or not they are co-funded by the Community, will the Commission say: Has the Commission been informed by the Greek authorities about the precise content of the legislative arrangements governing this specific mathematical formula and the proposals for modifying it published in the media and to what extent these are compatible with Community law and the rules of competition? Has the Commission asked for the Greek authorities to modify this formula, and what measures have been taken in respect of accusations of infringements of Community law and to address the issue of the exceptionally low tenders for public contracts?"@en1
