The Swedish Minister for Equal Opportunities has indicated to the Swedish Parliament the readiness of her government to consider modification of the Swedish law on abortion so that the Swedish authorities would cover the costs of an abortion, not only for Swedish nationals and people residing in Sweden, but also for nationals from other Member States who have an abortion in Sweden. The Commission would point out that Member States are free to determine to whom they wish to extend financial coverage for the cost of medical treatment. Accordingly, there is nothing in Community law that would prevent the Swedish Government from amending its legislation in the manner proposed."@en1
