". Mr President, out of courtesy to the Members of the European Parliament who have kindly remained with us until the end, I wish to say that the European Union will be embarking on a new exercise, that it will attempt to undertake this exercise as seriously as possible and that it is going to present a document on security strategy, the first ever, in a few days in Thessaloniki, which will certainly be followed by a mandate from the Heads of State and Government to continue working on it. I also believe – as many speakers have said – that it is good news that the European Union can now start thinking seriously and jointly about a common security strategy. In order for this to happen, however – and I repeat what several speakers have said – it is absolutely crucial not only to have in place good documents and good structures; there must also be the political will to act in worldwide organisations in a way that reflects the European Union’s significance in terms of population, wealth, etc. if the political will to do so exists, it can be done. Otherwise, however magnificent the papers we produce on the subject might be, they will again be simply papers and nothing else. Mr President, Madam Vice-President, I thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to hold this debate and I am sure that the next time, the attendance in the House will be somewhat greater."@en1
