"I have a number of announcements which I would like to make to the House. Her detention is not only regrettable but marks a retrograde step. On behalf of the European Parliament I call on the Burmese authorities to release her with immediate effect and to live up to the promise of dialogue and democracy, to release the country from economic deprivation caused by sanctions, and to restore political power to where it rightfully belongs: the people of Burma and their elected representatives. *** On Friday 30 May, two Spanish policemen, Mr Bonifazio Martín Hernándo and Mr Julián Envit Luna died after the explosion of a car bomb in Sangüesa, Navarra. At least two other people were seriously injured and remain critical. I have already, on behalf of this House, sent our sincere condolences to the members of their families and expressed our solidarity to the Spanish authorities via a communication to the Spanish Prime Minister, Mr Aznar. This new affront to democracy is one which we unreservedly condemn here in the European Parliament and we stand in solidarity with the government and people of Spain. As a mark of respect and of that solidarity, I ask you to observe one minute's silence for the victims of this latest terrorist atrocity in Spain. As you know, in the past two weeks there have been two violent earthquakes of catastrophic proportions in Algeria, killing at least 2 200 people and injuring 9 000, with 1 200 people unaccounted for and tens of thousands of people left homeless. I have already conveyed our deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims' families and the authorities through President Bouteflika. The President will, as you know, address this House in a formal sitting tomorrow. In my introductory remarks tomorrow, in the presence of President Bouteflika, I propose to ask the House to rise for a minute's silence as a mark of sympathy and solidarity. *** It is also my sad duty today to mark the deaths of 62 members of the Spanish armed forces and 13 Ukrainian crew members in an air crash which took place on 26 May in northern Turkey. They were returning to Spain after four months of peace-keeping and humanitarian tasks in Afghanistan. We acknowledge and salute the invaluable contribution which the special Spanish units have made in that mission to Afghanistan. I would ask you now to observe one minute's silence as a token of our respect and sympathy for the victims of this accident. *** At the outset of our order of business today I should also like to express, on behalf of the House, the deep concern, which I know all here share, at the news that Aung San Suu Kyi, our 1990 Sakharov Prize winner, has been taken into protective custody in Rangoon. As it happens, only last week I received a letter from Aung San Suu Kyi in which she expressed her personal hope that, despite travel restrictions imposed on her, she would be able to take up our offer to come to the European Parliament and to address this House."@en1
