"Mr President, in 1989 I witnessed the political upheaval in Central and Eastern Europe in person. Among all the others, one particular cry of joy from that wonderful year has stayed with me: ‘God has helped us!’ This superhuman help is still essential, particularly as we are on the threshold of achieving an historical breakthrough in the West. At the same time, the European Union is struggling with serious diplomatic and economic problems. In this crucial phase, it will be all the more important for us to take responsibility together for future cooperation between Member States. Peace and security are the prime objectives in this, not least for acceding countries, given their recent past. This elementary fact is acknowledged in Paragraph 6 of the draft resolution of the Brok report, and rightly so. According to this paragraph, the European Union therefore has a particular responsibility when it comes to strengthening transatlantic ties. That applies in particular to the relationships between the EU and NATO. Duly noted! Indeed, in this regard, let the European institutions not dash the legitimate expectations of the citizens of the accession countries, for the sake of a more secure, more just world."@en1
