"Mr President, the process of opening up the European rail network to competition, as recommended by the Jarzembowski report, is a retrograde step. It represents a serious threat to the interests of both rail users and employees. Voting in favour of this report amounts to behaving like a vulgar lobbyist for those private interests who want to do away with the public service railways. Everyone knows that private companies are only interested in their profits and will therefore cut back on investment or staff. Everyone is aware that the privatisation of
has led to a series of disasters. We will not neglect the interest of the people of Europe so that a small number of private organisations can make money on the backs of rail users, while possibly putting passengers’ lives at risk.
Rail transport should be an integrated European public service. We reject this report and all other proposals for privatisation."@en1
