We voted in favour of it, of course, because of what it stands for, whilst being aware that it will not actually change anything at all. We could delude ourselves by saying that the delays are the result of the cumbersome nature of society, and that by repeating principles, the European Parliament will at least be able to be ahead of society. But that is not even true. To take just one example, in several countries that are already part of the European Union or in the process of joining it, abortion is practically forbidden and, in any event, highly restricted. The European institutions could take strong political measures by making women’s rights a condition for membership of the Union. However, the Union, which is quite capable of breaking down barriers when it comes to the movement of goods and capital, is not able to do so when it comes to protecting the fundamental right of women to be in charge of their own bodies."@en1
