lpv:translated text	"Question No 1 by Josu Ortuondo Larrea (): The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, solemnly proclaimed at Nice in December 2000, stipulates, inter alia, that ‘the Union shall respect cultural, religious and linguistic diversity’ (Article 22) and that ‘any discrimination based on any ground such as… language… [and] membership of a national minority… shall be prohibited’ (Article 21(1)). However, on 14 October the French Government detained a number of people in the city of Bayonne, in the northern Basque Country, for erecting a sign at the railway station in the Basque language, Euskara. The sign read BAIONAKO GELTOKIA, which simply means Bayonne railway station. In the Council’s view, is the French Government complying with the stipulations of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in suppressing the use of a language, especially in its place of origin, where its use predates that of French? Does it not believe that the French Government itself should see to it that Basque citizens are provided with all public signs in their vernacular language so as to prevent them from suffering discrimination on grounds of language or membership of a national minority?"@en1
