"Mr President, I rise on a brief point of order. Parliament’s President closed this morning’s debate on the future of the enlarged European Union by congratulating the interpreters on their professionalism and on the quality of their work during the debate. I should like to say that, according to my information, it was the Portuguese interpreting booth that achieved the greatest number of direct interpretations, in other words, without using a relay language. I say this, obviously not to create any sense of competition between the booths but to join with the congratulations and to express my hope that in future, Parliament can match, in political terms, the professionalism of the interpreters and is able to follow the example that they have set us: a practical demonstration that enlargement must not be used as an excuse for lowering the standard of our interpreting and that, on the contrary, it should be used as a tool for enhancing Europe’s linguistic and cultural pluralism, as the President so rightly emphasised."@en1
