lpv:translated text	"Madam President, Commissioner, I should first of all like to congratulate the rapporteur on the work he has done and to thank him for this. Next, I should like clearly to emphasise that reform of the common fisheries policy must be based upon the sustainable development of fisheries. The sustainability in question must be defensible from an environmental point of view and be conceived in both economic and social terms. The Group of the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party is able to support the Commission’s proposals for reform, which contain a number of features aimed at sustainability and, therefore, the balance needed if the stock of fish is to be adjusted to the existing number of fishing vessels. We would remind you that it is very important to secure the fishermen’s understanding for, without that and without cooperation with the fishermen, we shall not be able to achieve the necessary results. In that connection, we must respect the fact that fishermen all around the EU attend to their tasks in different ways. It is absolutely crucial to the common fisheries policy that decisions be made on the basis of very clear scientific data. The Commission must gather this data from the Member States and, at the same time, have the necessary technical and, especially, human administrative and supervisory resources available to it. We should also very much like to emphasise that the EU must participate more in the development of the international fisheries policy. It is important for our third-country agreements to be given a central place in this connection."@en1
