"Mr President, next Monday, 20 May, Timor will be declaring its independence. It is an historic day for the Timorese people, who have fought for many years in the most terrible conditions for a free and independent homeland. It is therefore important that we should acclaim the victory of the people of East Timor and that our President, acting on behalf of the European Parliament, should send our congratulations to President Xanana Gusmão and all the Timorese people. It is equally important to bear in mind, however, that their problems are not over yet: it is essential that the European Union should maintain close cooperation with this new independent state and approve vital financial support for Timor in the next Community budget, in order to contribute to the development that was prevented under occupation. The people of Timor deserve our full solidarity, and I shall be grateful, Mr President, if, on our behalf, you would pass on our solidarity and our congratulations on the victory of independence."@en1
