In Italy, Mr Berlusconi has clearly stated that he would like Russia to become part of the European Union as soon as possible. However, I believe – and I want to declare it publicly in this House – that we must first wait for the fruit of an association agreement, a cooperation agreement, and that the Europeans who have been separated from us for too long, in other words the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, should become part of the European Union first.
