"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I also wish to briefly address the issue of hunting. My view is that in certain Member States hunting brings an important extra source of food to the dining table. For example, in my country two million small and 100 000 large wild game animals are hunted every year and there are 300 000 hunters. It is therefore important. Game animals are naturally also for sale on shop shelves or they are given or sold to neighbours and relatives. Now the issue is whether it is reasonable for the EU to start regulating this sort of activity, which is often based on trust and close acquaintanceship. It is as if social control were a guarantee of quality when a local shopkeeper buys meet from a hunter to sell. A sense of moderation should be kept in these matters. I am also wholeheartedly in favour of accepting Amendment No 82 in this report by Mr Schnellhardt."@en1
