".
Earlier today I voted against Mr Marinho's report on the proposal for a Council regulation to determine which Member State will be responsible for processing asylum applications lodged by third-country nationals.
I believe strongly that the UK, as an island, occupies a unique position within the EU. We have always been responsible for our own policy decision-making on asylum applications and illegal immigrants and we should continue to do so. Flaunting of the Geneva Convention, as we see on a daily basis at present, is shameful. As and when this Council regulation is imposed, will it improve the situation or will France continue to play wing three-quarters with its illegal immigrants?"@en1
