". Mr President, in response to the remarks that have just been made, I think it is important to bear the nature of the issue in mind. On the one hand, we have the cultural, linguistic and other diversities which constitute one of the greatest resources of the European Union and of Europe in general. I am aware that these diversities are presented as one of the European Union’s most important assets in the present version of the text. This poses no problem. On the other hand, we have the question of whether we should depart from what, to date, has been current European Union practice. The various institutions of the European Union do not concern themselves in assessing the constitutional arrangements of Member States, providing of course that these arrangements are compatible with fundamental principles, such as human rights and the protection of minorities and so on. This is our ongoing policy. I think that we should not confuse respect for diversities with a departure of this nature. In essence, this would involve breaking a long tradition. I regard this as a wise tradition, although this is merely my personal opinion."@en1
