In no Member State is the religion of an identity card holder mentioned on the card. Lastly, the Republic of Greece has removed any mention of religion on identity cards and its initiative has been approved by the Greek Council of State, which considered that even the optional mention of religion on identity cards contravenes Article 13 of the Greek Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion. The Commission’s position with regard to the indication of religion on national identity cards has not changed. We would ask the honourable Member to refer in particular to the answer the Commission gave to the oral questionby Mr Alavanos. Such a measure would not only breach an individual’s right to freedom of religion, but could also lead to discrimination, whether overt or covert, on the grounds of religion."@en1
