"Mr President, I was very pleased about the speech given on behalf of the Presidency, and I was particularly glad that importance was attached to how people in the candidate countries experience the situation. We must not ignore the fact that there are to be referendums in quite a lot of the candidate countries. I hope that people in the candidate countries read, in particular, that part of Mr Brok’s report consisting of the statements from the Committee on Women’s Rights and Equal Opportunities and the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs for these, in my opinion, give due weight to what is really important to the individual citizen. I hope, however, that they do not read the part concerning the common foreign and security policy and, in particular, NATO membership. We all know that a common European defence would cost a fair amount of money. Calculations show that, for our part of Europe, it would mean a 50% increase in budgets. I dare not even imagine what it would mean for the candidate countries. I hope that people read the good part of the reports, and I hope that it is this, and not all the other parts, that will be pivotal to the enlargement process."@en1
