"Mr President, I do not have a great deal to add, because the Commissioner has answered the questions that I wanted to ask. Having said that, I would just say that it is important that we focus perhaps one last time on the fact that all the causes of what is happening today in a country like the Central African Republic are linked to these famous ‘structural adjustment’ policies, which were imposed on countries by the IMF and the World Bank, which force whole populations to live in poverty and which prevent them from effectively resisting dictators across the world. Commissioner, Mr President, I am very anxious that the European Union should continue to increase its efforts to come to the aid of civilian populations, and of democracy itself, by fighting against these policies of structural withdrawal, because they are unfair. They help to strengthen dictators, not democrats."@en1
