"Question No 4 byJosu Ortuondo Larrea (): The hake fishery underwent a fundamental change over the second half of the 90s, notably thanks to the appearance of large numbers of gillnet vessels, which by 1999 accounted for over 20% of landings, as opposed to only 4% in 1994. Given that with this form of fishing the effort is measured on the basis of net length and the number of times the nets enter the sea, this shift in method has led to a significant increase in the actual fishing effort, in respect of a reproductive stock already affected by a fall in numbers to below the precautionary level over the 90s. What action has the Council taken to limit this uncontrolled effort and its adverse effects on the reproductive stock? Have limits been placed on the number and length of the nets which can be used at each tide?"@en1
