"Mr President, as usual, Mr Poettering had a wry smile on his lips when he came into the Hemicycle. How, therefore, could we not smile the smile of Riley while we talk of rice, the subject of Mr Miranda's report? It is precisely the treatment of rice in this report that concerns me. I voted against the report because, while I fully support the opening-up of European markets to underdeveloped countries, I do not feel that this should apply to the rice markets. In Italy, particularly in the provinces of Novara, Vercelli, Pavia and Milan, rice is the basic source of income of a great many farmers. I therefore totally oppose the opening-up of the rice markets to all the world markets. And now, "Bon appétit," Mr President. I hope there will be a good risotto on the menu."@en1
