"Madam President, you mentioned the elections in the Basque Autonomous Community. The Spanish of the Basque Autonomous Community has not succeeded. We have paid for that. Yesterday's elections have been a rough competition on who is best to fight our political option. It is therefore not astonishing, if we appear as losers. The real failure, however, is that of the Spanish nationalists, the PP and the Socialist Party and the very government of SeƱor Aznar. They have not achieved their goal of ousting Basque nationalists from the autonomous government. The election results give us a clear message. A large majority of the Basque people is urging political parties to come back to the 1998 agreement of Lizarra for a breakthrough from the actual situation. The European Union can no longer consider this issue as an internal question of the Spanish Kingdom."@en1
