"Mr President, I should also like to thank Mrs Oomen-Ruijten for her own-initiative report. I think it only right that we in Parliament make efforts to reduce the problems experienced by frontier workers. I am familiar with the problems from Southern Jutland, where it is worth noting how few people live on one side of the Danish-German border and work on the other side. I think this illustrates how major the obstacles in practice are. That is why I think it is a good idea to try to get the Member States to continually assess the effects upon frontier workers whenever they change tax and social security legislation. In my opinion, we cannot, however, require governments to compensate frontier workers financially for changes in legislation. It is better to heighten awareness not only of the problems there have always been, but also of new problems that might arise. I should also like to support the view that we should do more to simplify Regulation 1408/71. This is a very far-reaching problem, but one of great importance to many people."@en1
