"I would like to thank the Commissioner for his response and for his very positive leadership in this crucial area, and I must say that his response has also been reassuring from a consumer perspective.
However, the House will be aware of the resistance of some countries, mainly the United States, to conforming to EU standards on food safety. Can the Commissioner inform the House of the volume of meat and meat products entering the Community from third countries and the health status of these products – it may be a question that he may not be in a position to answer straight away – and can he also inform the House of the position on the use of meat-and-bone meal in animal feed in those exporting countries and the extent to which this now international problem can be addressed in the context of world trade? We must find an international solution to a problem that is seriously affecting consumers worldwide."@en1
