"Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, on Saturday, a horrific accident struck the people of Enschede, in the Netherlands. There was an explosion in a fireworks warehouse which has already caused at least sixteen deaths and has injured over six hundred people, six of whom are in a critical condition, with many more people reported missing. Around four hundred homes have been destroyed by the explosion, and more than a thousand have suffered damage. This is one of the most terrible disasters in the Netherlands since the second world war. I have contacted the Dutch authorities to express our deepest sympathy, both in a personal capacity and on behalf of the European Parliament. At this sad time, our thoughts go out to the victims, to their families, and also to the emergency rescue teams who are working tirelessly. Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to observe a minute’s silence."@en1
