"Thank you, Commissioner, but what I would have liked to know is what the Commission is actually doing to ensure, specifically, that the Member States construct a proper railroad in the Somport Valley. Today, the works on the road route are already under way. We are right, therefore, to ask questions about the future.
Personally, I am afraid that provision will be made for a little tourist train just to, perhaps, keep the ecologists happy, and that will be all.
Studies have been carried out, however, such as the Gretab study, to cite but one, which show that in fact the railroad route via the Somport–Pau–Canfranc–Jaca pass would enable a volume of heavy goods traffic equal to that currently using the Mont Blanc Tunnel. What we would in fact like to see, therefore, and what I would have liked to know, following Mr Lamoureux’s proposals within the Committee on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism, to the effect that the European Union was really going to prioritise rail, is what do you actually propose to do in real terms in order to ensure that Member States also make this a priority?"@en1
