"Mr President, today we are addressing various aspects of the dramatic human rights issue, and although we are from another part of the world, Parliament must speak out loud and clear at a time when the situation in Iraq continues to be very serious. First of all, this country constitutes a threat for the entire region, and secondly, it represents a clear, continuous and patent violation of human rights. We need to call for the Kuwaiti prisoners to be released – according to reliable reports, there are around 600 prisoners of war apparently held in absolutely inhuman conditions – acknowledging the authoritative figures speaking up in the Arab world, such as the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Abdel Meguid, who is asking for human rights to be respected and for reconciliation between the Arab States. We must not forget that, when all is said and done, this is all the consequence of a clear violation of states’ rights, as at the time of Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. I would invite Parliament to speak out on this, while bearing in mind that, according to reliable sources, it seems that, unfortunately, Kuwait is also holding quite a number of Iraqi prisoners of war, and again the conditions these prisoners are living in give cause for concern. We need to convince Kuwait that its justified case for its rights to be respected would be much stronger if it first fulfilled its duties towards humanity and its rights."@en1
