"I supported this motion for a resolution in light of its evaluation of the extent of energy poverty prevalent in developing countries. The provision of access to electricity and energy sources for developing countries should be a priority for our political agenda. Thus, I support the Commission’s energising development initiative as a means to advance progress in this field, and as one who had the privilege of representing Parliament in Marrakesh, and indeed in Paris last year, it was interesting to meet representatives from various third countries. One thing that was very notable is that the energy demands in Africa will treble over the next number of years, and in Asia it will double. So having targets to reduce emissions, and rightly so, means an awful lot of support will have to be given to them, especially through the Climate Fund of EUR 100 billion plus, and this will help towards giving them their energy requirements, but also reduce emissions."@en1
