"Mr President, it is often said that SMEs constitute the keystone in the economies of our Member States, and thus, in initiatives such as the cohesion policy and the Euro 2020 strategy, careful consideration has been given to the role of SMEs in the economy, both now and in the future. As this report highlights the key economic concerns and priorities of the European Union, I support its proposals in the sphere of resource efficiency, growth and, above all, competitiveness, as well as the reflections on the relation to regional policy.
The report acknowledges the impact that the economic downturn had on SMEs throughout Europe, acknowledging the stifling of demand which was experienced. This is something I understand, given the obstacles that the Irish economy has faced: thankfully we are now recovering.
The recommendation for more and more efficient financial instruments is a good one, and I think that, if we implement these measures in a balanced way, we will ensure that SMEs can continue to innovate, compete and grow, and that, in conjunction with the digital single market, SMEs can thrive into the future."@en1
