"I voted in favour of this report because it clearly calls for children to be prioritised in Member States when it comes to housing, education, health care and nutrition. Austerity policies have created a situation where 27.7% of children are at risk of poverty and social exclusion. In my home country, Ireland, the figure is above average and has actually doubled since the economic crash in 2008. Extremely worrying is the fact that 1 500 children are currently homeless in Ireland.
This report addresses issues such as social exclusion and the need to tackle unemployment and promote job security, which will help to lift families out of poverty. The report encourages a holistic approach to dealing with the issue of child poverty and references the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child that guarantees all children universal access to housing, education, nutrition and healthcare."@en1
