"This vote is for action to exclude conflict minerals from EU markets, and make sure that products sold in the EU do not fuel armed militias or foster human rights violations in conflict areas. Under the proposals, companies must make reasonable checks to ensure the step behind them in the supply chain can verify where the product came from, which will help break the link between armed conflict and the minerals trade. Voluntary requirements have been in place for many years, but very few businesses have taken them up. These new mandatory requirements, while not burdensome on any one link in the supply chain, would make a huge difference to those on the ground in conflict areas. Labour MEPs voted in favour of these new requirements."@en1
