"Mr President, I hope that this evening’s debate sends out a strong signal of support to the people of Iraq and Syria. This is about torture, oppression, murder, domination and a systematic attempt to extinguish religious minorities.
We are key players in the region. We have a responsibility to work with the new Iraqi Government in all ways possible. Islamic State (ISIS) represents a threat not just to Iraq but also to the entire region. Clearly they will stop at nothing in fomenting their brand of fundamentalism, which is rotten to the core. Defeating ISIS is also about defeating those brainwashed young European citizens who participate as radical fighters in a part of the world that they know nothing about.
I believe that a new opportunity exists to forge a better relationship with Iran. Despite obvious past differences between Iran and the European Union, and Iran and the United States, I believe we have a common objective now in attempting to destroy ISIS and in helping the Iraqi Government to rebuild their country. Iran is a key player in the region. The new President of Iran has repeatedly said that he wants to cooperate with the EU in fighting the violence and the extremism of ISIS. Iran’s border with Iraq is more than 1700 km long. Iran has officially welcomed the formation of the new Iraqi Government and backs the principle of Iraqi unity as a means of stabilising security in the region.
In short, I believe that a new opportunity for détente exists between Iraq and the West."@en1
