"Mr President, I have a particular interest in Venezuela because I happen to have a brother who has been a Catholic missionary there since 1979. He works amongst the poor. I can tell you that the people of Venezuela are very nice, they are decent people and they long for peace and prosperity, a prosperity which has been denied them for many years under Chávez. It should be a very rich country with its oil reserves, but these have been given exclusively to an élite. His successor is now finding it difficult because he does not maybe have the same charisma as Chávez to hold on to power and is resorting to undemocratic means.
You have to respect a free press. You have to respect a free opposition. Particularly when the next elections come they have to be monitored internationally so that they are free and proper. With regard to the results, whoever gets into power must respect the freedom of everybody. They must try and raise the standards of the poor so they can all benefit from what should be a very rich country."@en1
