"The global financial crisis has hit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Europe hard. The impact of research projects or development of technologies not pursued due to a lack of funding is difficult to quantify. Major developments in research and innovation are usually the result of risks taken by SMEs, thus I believe it is imperative that we fully support the competitiveness of these enterprises in the 2014-2020 period as we begin our long road to recovery. The approval of the Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs (COSME) programme focuses on growing SMEs, with better access to markets and additional funding through risk-capital or loan guarantees. With regard to my own constituency, I believe the simplification of COSME has the potential to attract the participation of more SMEs, with local SMEs benefiting from the ‘Fast Track to Innovation’ pilot which aims to speed up the time from idea to market. In Northern Ireland, stimulating private sector investment and promoting research and innovation are just a few of the challenges facing SMEs. I hope approval of the COSME programme will make these challenges more surmountable in the years ahead."@en1
