"Mr President, I too welcome today’s report and strongly endorse the EUR 10 million in savings on Parliament’s interpretation budget that has already been achieved as the result of reforms to the system introduced last year.
This is a substantial step in the right direction but I believe that more can be done. I also welcome the move to streamline the interpretation and translation given in committee meetings while guaranteeing – and I think this is really important – that the principle of multilingualism is not compromised by any changes made.
Surely, however, it is unacceptable – as other speakers have mentioned – that 7% of last year’s interpretation budget was lost as a result of meetings being cancelled at the last minute.
My Lib Dem colleagues and I want to see an improvement on these figures this year and further savings made. At a time of crisis, with citizens in the UK and across the EU tightening their belts, the European Parliament must get its house in order, give a lead and find savings and efficiencies where it can.
I have tabled amendments to cut Parliament’s budget next year and I would urge colleagues from all parties to work with us in trying to find further savings."@en1
