"While we should welcome the emphasis placed on human rights and greater participation by civil society, this report is nevertheless based on compliance with the Copenhagen criteria, namely the establishment of ‘stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities’; ‘a functioning market economy and the capacity to cope with competition and market forces in the EU’; and ‘the ability to take on and implement effectively the obligations of membership, including adherence to the aims of political, economic and monetary union’.
To vote for this report would therefore be implicitly or explicitly to support these economic and social policies, which have devastating effects on the people. I voted against this report in order to protect the inalienable right of peoples to decide for themselves."@en1
