"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I am in favour of the text of Ms Costa’s report on protecting children in the digital world, given that the percentage of young people online is constantly growing. I think that it is imperative to protect minors from websites with harmful content with strong elements of violence, racism and discrimination. Moreover, we must not underestimate the presence of child pornography websites, which can put at risk the lives of the very youngest, and of people who try to lure minors.
It is for schools to train minors in the practical and critical use of the digital technology associated with the internet. Training allows young people to master digital skills, which have been recognised as among the eight key competences required for those living in a knowledge-based society. With schools, society shares this responsibility, aware as it is of the social and economic advantages of critical, active and safe use of digital media by minors, as opposed to use leading to dependence …"@en1
