".
I support the European Parliament’s resolution calling on the Council to start negotiations for a free trade agreement with Japan on the basis of the outcome of the scoping exercise and clear targets. It is essential to take advantage of the existing bilateral trade potential that could benefit the economies of both the EU and Japan, both of which are currently experiencing difficult times. Preliminary estimates show that if tariffs and non-tariff barriers were reduced to the fullest possible extent, EU exports to Japan could increase by 71 %, while Japanese exports to the EU could increase by 61 %. Naturally, in future negotiations on a free trade agreement, the problems raised in the European Parliament’s resolution, including environmental protection, must be taken into consideration."@en1
