".
I voted in favour. The European Union and the Republic of Moldova aim to assure the mutual protection of geographical indications (GIs) in order to improve bilateral trade conditions and promote quality in the food chain, while adding value for sustainable rural development. The proposed agreement is the result of bilateral negotiations concluded on 18 April 2011. For the EU, these negotiations had two objectives: on the one hand expansion of the protection and use of the geographical indications system (the Republic of Moldova will protect all the EU GIs listed), and on the other hand intervention at source with regard to potential misuses of EU GIs. Reciprocally, the Republic of Moldova had an interest in developing and protecting its current geographical indications and strengthening its relations with the EU. The agreement provides for mutual protection of geographical designations and indications (PDOs and PGIs) on the territory of the respective parties. The proposed agreement has no implications on the EU budget."@en1
