". The fisheries sector is fundamental to the European Union, not only as regards food but also as regards the environment. Thus the sustainable management of fisheries resources is one of the EU’s concerns, above all as regards endangered species. The European Parliament, aware of the importance of this sector, has often debated this matter. In 2009 it adopted a resolution (206), on the need to conserve fisheries resources in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. Everyone acknowledges that the common fisheries policy has in general been a failure. Whereas fisheries management within the 12-mile zones (which is the responsibility of the Member States) has been a success, management outside these zones (the responsibility of Brussels) has been a disaster. I voted in favour of this report because I agree with the rapporteur on the two aspects mentioned in his conclusion: as regards urgency, since the current 12-mile zones, although they work well, will expire on 31 December, it is necessary to extend them for two more years; and as regards inclusion of this debate within a broader scope – that is, within the process of reform of the European Union’s common fisheries policy."@en1
