"Mr President, I am very grateful that we are all being absolutely clear in calling this massacre a massacre, as indeed the title of the resolution states. To Ms De Keyser, I would say that, had your group voted in favour during the negotiations, that would be in the text as well, rather than just in the title. I am therefore all the more thankful to you for having spoken out so clearly now. The South Africans should be in no doubt; this House has a clear common position. We want to support South Africa. For us, South Africa is an important economic and political partner. It is a country that also suffered appallingly under the gruesome apartheid regime, and we Europeans do bear a certain share of the responsibility for that.
Today, however, we need to ensure that democracy and the rule of law do not stall in South Africa. Unfortunately, the signs are clearly visible that this massacre was not just a one-off tragedy or an accident, but that it was part, if anything, of a systematic development away from democracy. The key phrase that needs to be applied here is – this must be nipped in the bud! That is the aim with this resolution."@en1
